| Citânia de Sanfins - Come to discover the Celtic culture in peninsular territory |
Situated on a plateau, in a leading position which gave it a great security against invasions, it’s today one of the main marks of the Celtic culture of the northwest peninsula.
Occupying about 18 hectares in a large platform, the made excavations left one hundred and fifty circular and square dwellings open to discover, grouped into sets of about 40 households.
The Citânia’s visitor has the opportunity to visit a reconstruction of one of these family units, allowing you to view their volume in the archaeological context, as well as the interior spaces - courtyard or street, main house with attachment or porch and a circular support house and all a set of attachments which serve as storage sites and for collection of animals - sheep, goats, cattle and horses.
Among the II century BC and his total abandonment of the century at the IV AD century, Citânia Sanfins played a role of big metropolis and cultural center of a whole region.
Today, its visit gives us a real history lesson, at a location with a panoramic view over the whole area of the county, Atlantic coast, the valleys of Vizela and Sousa, with the Serra of Cabreira, Marão and Alvão as background.
Visit also the Archaeological Museum of Citânia de Sanfins and the Center for Celtic archeology and Celtic studies. |
